Alexander Nevsky (1939)
Thursday, February 7 | 7:00 PM | Tivoli Cinemas
Sergei Eisenstein's landmark tale of Russia thwarting the German invasion of the 13th century was wildly popular and an intentional propaganda piece in reaction to the prevailing Nazi geopolitical advancement and destruction at the time. It can still be viewed as a masterful use of imagery and music, with the Battle on the Ice sequence as an obvious highlight. The score, written by Prokofiev, was effectively integrated into the film by the Russian filmmaker, but stands on its own merit, as well.
Running time: approx. 112 minutes
Spring Symphony (1986)
Thursday, March 28 | 7:00 PM | Tivoli Cinemas
The motion picture Spring Symphony is a story of love, hate and artistic ambitions. Nastassja Kinski and Herbert Gronemeyer star as Clara Wieck and Robert Schumann, star-crossed musicians of the 19th century trying to overcome the stifling objections of Wieck's father. All three of them share the same passion for music, but the battle the two men fight over Clara is finally resolved when Schumann wins her hand.
Running time: approx. 103 minutes
