In late 16th-century Florence, the home of famed lutenist and music theorist Vincenzo Galilei was a fertile breeding ground for important innovations in the realms of music and science. In 1609 his son, Galileo—later to be widely acclaimed as the "father of modern science" for his ground-breaking contributions to astronomy, physics, and mathematics—first developed, used, and publicly displayed the astronomical telescope. The 400th anniversary of this world-changing event was the impetus for the development of this program.
In a stellar fusion of science, arts, and
culture, the internationally-renowned Baroque orchestra Tafelmusik will present The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres. This event uses images, words, and music (some by Galileo’s own father) to explore the world in which 17th- and 18th-century astronomers worked, speaking profoundly and eloquently of the wonders of the cosmos and the achievements of the human spirit.
